Hobart's Top 5 Breakfast Callings.

You needn’t worry about booking self-catered accommodation if you’re planning a visit to Tasmania. Leave the task of breakfast to the many locally owned cafes and boutique bakeries offered and shift your focus on the difficult choice of deciding which to order each morning.

Warm piped donuts, flaky hand-made croissants and smoked salmon fished from the harbour views only metres away are just a few of the temptations likely to spoil you for choice when tasting the tiny town of Hobart.

  1. Queen’s Pastry: Expect nothing less than pastry royalty when lining up for one of Queen’s freshly baked treats.

Upon entering, a minimalist layout allows your attention to quickly be drawn to what they’re best known for, their coffee and carbs. A wall poster informs you of what you so badly must know…..the three daily times when croissants are brought hot from the oven. Allowing for a truly French experience.

You can trust the regulars know best, with many locals opting for the oozing cheese and stuffed ham croissants, nutella filled donuts or the majesty herself, a gigantic piped lemon curd cruffin. Before you ask, it’s a cross between a croissant and a muffin. Aka baked indulgence.

What’s even better is that there is now an added excuse to get your hands on a second helping with a sister store set to open in less than two weeks time. Expect the same high quality at the Circle of Life which will also be rolling out delicious yeast risen donuts in a whole range of fun flavours.

The new open kitchen design will go ve us donut lovers another reason to spend even longer gazing at unique flavour combos which will be created freshly in front of our eyes. I’ll need to be reminded to keep my hands to myself.

I’m not sure if I’m ready to see each and every naughty ingredient that goes into making these halos of goodness so I best be visiting on my next trip to Hobart to find out right?

2. Machine Laundry Cafe: I’m all for multi-tasking. Especially if it involves satisfying morning hunger over a load of washing. Half laundry/half cafe, the well known breakfast location is a popular hotspot which offers a simple and traditional menu.

Highly recommended dishes include their poached pear and vanilla porridge topped with rhubarb and almonds alongside the indulgent eggs Benedict with a side of smoked salmon. If you’ve been searching for a great vegetarian or vegan meal, look no further than their popular lentil spiced vegetable burger.

The small eatery suits those who like a sleep in, operating between 7:30am - 5pm and dishes up both breakfast and lunch options. With the salamanca markets attracting large crowds and making lines long, I’d suggest visiting on any other day except Saturday if you’re hoping to nab a seat quickly.

3. Tricycle Cafe & Bar Salamanca: I normally avoid anything associated with the word ‘cycle’ after still having flashback episodes of the pain felt whilst sitting on a stationary bike during my treacherous knee reconstruction. Thankfully the team at Tricycle Cafe & Bar managed to ease all fears by serving up some of the best local delicacies in Salamanca.

Their revolving menu focuses on seasonal ingredients, showcasing some of the best organic produce offered in Tasmania.

Cross your fingers that the brown rice congee with pickled kimchi, fermented chilli sambal and fried egg makes an appearance on the daily specials board. If not, you can settle for second best and order the fluffy scrambled eggs or for the more adventurous, the black bean miso avocado toast.

4. Ginger Brown Cafe: I understood immediately why this bustling cafe was one of the most raved about places when asking around for breakfast recommendations. Situated in South Hobart, you’ll need access to a vehicle to get to this little gem which is open until 4pm, seven days a week.

If your sweet tooth is screaming, don’t ignore the in-house made crumpets topped with lemon curd, raspberry mascarpone and coconut. For something slightly less damaging to the waistline, order the baked coconut rice pudding decorated with sultanas, banana, toasted almonds and freeze-dried raspberries. The vegetarian mushroom bruschetta is also a worthy choice.

5. Small-fry: When I was younger I used to wonder what bakeries did with all of the excess cut outs removed to form the holes in donuts. Sadly I learnt the truth that those fluffy mini dough bites I dreamt of never actually existed.

Luckily for me the crew at small-fry dried my tears with their small range of donut perfection.

Less than ten dishes form a refined menu which allows top quality control, with popular breakfast slider choices including options of smoky pork belly, crumbed haloumi, egg and bacon or shaved brisket. If you’re looking for another savoury option, the four cheese brioche toastie stuffed with onion jam, pickles and chives is also a dish to be persuaded by.

The real hero of Small-fry is however the very talented April Matusik whose creations are so well known that they don’t even need a place on the menu.

The artist herself delicately hand makes and brings to life some of the best flavour combinations I’ve ever tasted. I’m talking passionfruit cheesecake, chai pear granola, raspberry white chocolate, peach leatherwood and decadent chocolate salted caramel. And yes, these aren’t even desserts, they are are all donuts flavours!
